Austin native Glen Powell has been making a Texas sized splash in Hollywood the last few years. After starring roles in projects like Hidden Figures, Scream Queens, Set It Up and the Austin shot Everybody Wants Some, the Westwood High School grad auditioned for what’s sure to be one of the biggest films of the year.

When Powell auditioned for the Top Gun sequel, he was originally up for the role of Rooster, the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards) but eventually lost the role to Miles Teller. However, Powell was so impressive that the filmmakers found a different role for him. There aren’t a lot of details about his part yet, except the rumor that they made what was originally going to be a small part into a more substantial one just for Powell.

Powell didn’t just impress the casting directors. Tom Cruise liked Powell so much he bought him flying lessons as a gift and helped him get his pilots license.

Here’s a video Powell posted thanking Tom Cruise for his gift after his first solo flight.

The sequel to the film that starred Tom Cruise is set 30 years after the original movie.

Part two was first developed back in 2010 and due to the cast and crew’s desire for realism, the studio opted not to rely on CGI. That’s why the film took longer than anticipated to complete.

Tom Cruise has gone on record to state that he doesn’t think that there will ever be another film made like Maverick. And judging by the fact that the superstar does all his own stunts, we understand why.

Just check out this clip:

The movie is set to premiere June 24, 2020. While a lot of movie premieres have been postponed due to Coronavius, Top Gun: Maverick has not been postponed as of this moment. This is subject to change, of course, as the current state of the world is uncertain.

If you’re anything like us,  you may want to get ready for the new flick by re-watching the original Top Gun. The film is available to rent/ buy on  Amazon Prime Video.

Update: It was just announced that the original release date of June 24th has been pushed back to December 23rd due to Covid-19.
