Broke LA

Can’t afford a ticket to Coachella? Have no fear, Broke LA is here!

Branded as LA’s discovery fest, Broke LA highlights music, arts, food and all that other stuff you don’t know about yet. Artists who rock this festival go on to grace the stages of FYF, Coachella, SXSW and more.

This year, for the first time ever, the five stage festival took place a week before that big name fest so music lovers were able to enjoy both celebrations of the arts.

And what a celebration it was.

Here are our top 10 favorite things about Broke LA 2017.

1 – It’s only $25!

No jacked up cover charge here. You get nine hours of rockers, DJs, comedians and more for just $25.

2 – The art

Everywhere you turn, it’s a feast for your imagination. From straight up art installations to humorous signage, we were amused and inspired.

3 – The food

Speaking of feasts, there are all kinds of food options. Sushi burritos! Slider shots! And, of course, the more traditional offerings like pizza, tater tots, grilled cheese and so much more. We only wish we’d have had more time to enjoy it all.

4 – The brews

Watered down beer is not our favorite. Lucky for us, that wasn’t an option at this fest. High quality lagers and IPAs were offered by both the nationally distributed Laganitas and the local brewery Angel City. And they were priced at just six bucks.

Side note for our Austin, Texas, fans: we spotted an attendee sporting a Zilker Brewing cap. Drink local, y’all!

5 – The barks

Multiple animal societies give participants the opportunity to adopt a new family member as part of BARK LA. In partnership with No Kill Los Angeles, Best Friends Animal Society brings together passionate individuals, city shelters and an entire coalition of animal welfare organizations to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters throughout Los Angeles by the year 2017. Last year, friends of ours even took one of those little pups home!

And that’s not all. Festival goers are invited to bring their own furry friend along from 3-7pm (pre-registration required).

6 – Anything goes

The festival attracts such a cool and welcoming crowd. Seriously, everyone we crossed paths with was awesome AF. Which really falls in line with the entire atmosphere of the fest. Plus, while there was no desert chic style going on, there were plenty of fashionably hip cats in the crowd. And we mean that in the best way.

7 – The photo ops

From traditional photo booth setups to perfect locales for impromptu selfie sessions, there was no shortage of instagramable imagery. Which, as you can see, we took full advantage of.

8 – The DJs

One stage was dedicated totally to DJs. 10 performers played throughout the day but with so much happening, we were only able to enjoy sets from Neo Fresco and Awe.

If only we could be in two places as once. Where’s Hermione’s time-turner when you need it? Speaking of Harry Potter, we really should have tried these teleportation devices.

9 – The hip hop

Another stage offered hip hop beats from a variety of artists. Again, we only wish there was more time to see them all. Our faves on this stage included John Givez and Pham.

10 – The rock

We seemed to be drawn to the main stage as that’s where we caught the most acts. Candy Cigarettes kicked things off just after 3pm and the evening ended with James Supercave. But our favorites were Ugly Sweaters, Blood Boy and Brasstracks.
